Goals for Another Year
I started this blogging account earlier this year as one reason to keep in check some of my goals. I honestly have not done this as often as I would like.
As it is my birthday today, and a big one at 25, I am going to write some new goals for me to follow and hopefully cross off my bucket list.
- travel outside of the country again, Europe would be awesome!
- save $1,000
- get another tattoo (i think this one may be accomplished very soon)
- train for another long running race
- try a food I have never had before
- really clean out my wardrobe and start over with a new season
- of corse, blog more to keep track of my goals
Last month I participated in Plastic Free July. I focused mainly on food consumption; where my food came from and how much it was packaged, eating out and to-go packaging as well as what I store food in at home or to take with me for lunch.
Thought the month I started realizing how much of my every day goods were packaged in plastic - especially beauty items. Now your soap and toothpaste really can’t go without packaging, but you can think about what packaging they are in and what it is made out of (this also goes along with a huge media push from 5Gyres about plastic micro-beads in many soaps). Learn more about the issue and sign their petition for large cosmetic companies to commitment to phase out all micro-beads from their products in the coming years.
My main beauty products are from Aveeno. A few months ago I found a “New” body wash from them that used walnut flower as the exfoliate – natural and not plastic beads. As my shampoo is starting to run low, I am looking into some other non-name brand products that are organic – I am seeing more things with Moroccan oil out there and need to try some.
I also recently read an article about Aveda launching a bottle cap recycling program where you can drop off bottle caps to any store for recycling. This is on top of their effort to sell their products in bottles made out of recycled PET plastic and shining light on water conservation.
I have also become aware of Pangea Organics beauty products – it is like Mary Kay for the younger hipster generation. They promote beauty unpolluted by using only organic ingredients that have been proven to naturally help skin. I would love to try some of these out is anyone out there has a sample or knows a PANGEA BEAUTY ECOLOGIST.
Of course, I am always seeing Pinterest filled with DIY organic beauty solutions, but I honestly don’t have time for that.
Good luck on your responsible beauty quest. Everyone’s skin and hair is different and it does take time to find what works the best for you (remember middle school beauty experiments, I do)!
Thoughts on Plastic Free July
I would have liked to write about this earlier in the month but last week was horribly busy. So far, I thought I have done well at reducing my every day plastic consumption during Plastic Free July. There were totally times were I went to reach for plastic wrap and caught myself, making the change to steam my veggies instead of microwave them. I do have to admit that I caved into picking up Starbucks when I didn’t have my re-useable mug. Overall, I could see myself ridding my house of any one-use plastic and not miss the items at all!
However, my lifestyle and inside knowledge of restaurants and bars makes me upset as to how much plastic is used in food preparation. Not to mention the amount of beer bottles, cans and liquor bottles that a thrown away in a high volume establishment instead of being recycled. (I am not even going near the food waste). Is there something that can be done to make the mass population aware of these issues?
How, Time Can Get Away from Us
Well, considering my last post was months ago, you can tell I have been a busy girl. Started yet another serving job at a bar near Wrigley Field for the Chicago Cubs season as well as agreed to pick up some shifts when available at a old job. WHAT AM I THINKING. My weeks go from crazy serving 5 12-hour days in a row to the next trying to catch up on personal things and with that is going on at the start-up I work with, Better Bag.
Fitness: I still want to do the Chicago Triathlon, however it is hard for me to train regularly (not to mention that like everyone else, spring allergies got to me and I have been fighting with congestion for almost a month now) and have to motivation to run to the gym after I have ran around the city all day. Goal: train for a 5K and improve my time in a month, race/time trial around July 4. This way I can see where I am to add another 5k’s for the Olympic distance tri.
Healthy eating: For months now I have been reading about and playing with the idea along with some recipes for clean eating. Not to mention all of the GMO talk in the news lately! I keep saying that the next Monday I will start following the rules, but that never happens, come on who can be so picky when you get all your meals for free the days you work in the restaurant. I plan to do an outline and some serious research about the topic soon.
Chalenge myself: Like Clean eating is not enough of a challenge, I am going to embark on a month of forgoing one use plastic for Plastic Free July. More on this later!
Fun: with my crazy busy life schedule that makes me run from place to place all of the time, I find that it is hard to let my self relax and just enjoy things. For example, I was going into work after lunch today as I had a stressful shift at the restaurant last night then got down on myself for sleeping in instead of going to late morning yoga. I had to remind myself “Hey, it’s ok, you are playing dodgeball tonight silly!”
Stay tuned y’all!
